What Must I Do After Getting Filler?

Dermal filler aftercare is often an afterthought. We focus on how beautiful our skin will look after treatment and the youthful glow we will walk out the doors with and we don’t think about the healing time and how to best prepare for maximizing our results after treatment. Fillers are fantastic options for filling in fine lines and restoring lost volume. Most treatments help to increase collagen production to smooth and hydrate the skin. Although fillers are considered safe, it is still important to follow your board-certified providers instructions post-treatment.

What must I do after getting filler? Not all fillers are created equal. While injectable procedures differ in formula, benefits, and problem areas, the overall process for recovery, whether injected into the deep layer of skin (dermal fillers) or muscle (Botox), is the same. Patients will see almost immediate results whether you are looking to correct hollow cheeks or smooth forehead wrinkles. Dermal filler results are visible nearly right away but often can take a week or so before the final results show as minimal swelling and bruising will subside; Botox can take a little longer with typically up to two 2 weeks to see the full effect. Common potential side effects can be avoided with some tips of what you can do after you get a filler. These include remaining in an upright position for 3-4 hours following the injection, sleeping with your head elevated to reduce swelling and avoiding putting pressure on the filler area, avoid exercise or any strenuous activity that raises the heart rate, limit sun exposure, apply cold compresses for 5-10 minutes every hour, avoid massages or any other facial treatments for a couple of weeks following treatment, do not reapply makeup for at least a few hours to minimize the risk of infection, take prescribed pain medication as necessary, and follow up with your doctor if your experiencing severe pain or changes to skin at the injection site.
