What Are the Different Types of Surgeries for My Butt?

Wanting a round, voluminous booty is one of the hottest trends in cosmetic surgery. Statistics for lifting the butt are on the rise with butt augmentation procedures quickly becoming a top requested elective procedure at a 22% increase over the last couple of years. Butt enhancement procedures include butt augmentation with implants, a butt lift, and the Brazilian butt lift (BBL). When patients are looking into the different options for reshaping or augmenting their backside, they want to know, what are the different types of surgeries for my butt and what do they entail?

For patients desiring more size or shape to their butt, implants are a noteworthy option. Butt implants are contoured and designed for the buttocks and will withstand a patient’s weight and movement and like breast implants can be customized to fit any body type. Incision sites are typically in between the butt cheeks or underneath each side, just above the upper thigh. Butt implants can be placed on top or under the muscle structure. This procedure is the most invasive of the three3 options but is an excellent choice for patients requesting the most volume to their backside as well as patients who may not have the required amount of fat necessary for grafting, needed for a Brazilian Butt Lift.

Unlike butt implants, butt lifts simply lift the buttocks without providing any additional volume or shape. Butt lifts can be combined with butt implants or a Brazilian Butt Lift and in some cases are performed in conjunction with a tummy tuck, also known as a “mommy makeover”. For patients concerned about the droopy “curtain hang” of the butt cheeks, a lift will remove an excess skin and pull taut the remaining skin to create a more toned look. This option has the most visible scarring, but it will lessen over time.

A Brazilian Butt Lift, also known as BBL, is the least invasive option and serves as a dual procedure where fat grafting is combined with liposuction to enhance the backside to add projection for a fuller, symmetrical shape. Fat cells are extracted via liposuction (usually from the stomach, hips, or thighs), then purified and transferred to the buttocks. Although labeled a “lift”, BBL surgery does not actually lift or address sagging or loose skin around the area; however, 70% or more of the injected fat usually remains in the area long-term and can have lasting results if you follow after-care instructions and maintain a stable weight

As with any cosmetic procedure, choosing a qualified, board-certified plastic surgeon who will detail all your options to provide you with the most appropriate and successful surgery is key to enjoying your results for many years to come.
