Are Nipples Removed for a Breast Lift?
More and more women today are choosing to enhance their breast appearance by having a breast lift. A breast lift, also called a mastopexy, is a surgical procedure intended to correct the size, contour and elevation of sagging breasts. It can change your figure and revive your confidence by restoring the shape you once had, or by giving you a new, perky profile. The procedure works by reshaping and lifting sagging or loose breast tissue that has appeared as a result of pregnancy, breastfeeding, the effects of gravity or the aging process.
Breast lifts are usually performed under general anesthesia, so you won’t feel any discomfort or pain during the procedure.
After making incisions on the breasts, Dr. Allison removes the excess breast tissue. The nipple and areola are then moved to a higher position. Nipples are typically not removed for a breast lift. It is best to keep the nipple attached to the breast tissue so that nerve and blood supply is not interrupted. Doing so offers a greater chance of healing and having improved sensation compared to nipple removal.
If breast implants are being used, they will be inserted. Then the skin surrounding the areola is brought down and together to create a new breast shape. Lastly, all incisions are closed with sutures, often strategically placed under the breast so they are not noticeable.
On average, breast lift surgery takes 1-3 hours to perform. The procedure can take longer if breast implants are included. Following the surgery, you will be in the recovery room for 1-2 hours. The incisions will be covered with sterile gauze, and your breasts will be wrapped in thick bandages to keep them in place, so they can begin to heal. Before you are released, you will be given specific instructions on how to manage your recovery period.
After breast lift surgery, the shape of your breasts, the height of their projection and their balance/symmetry should be greatly improved.
