Revision Breast Surgery: Updating Your Implants

Breast implants are not made to last forever; in fact, most implants must be replaced after 10 years. In addition, there are potential complications that can make revision breast surgery necessary well before the 10-year milestone. Dr. David Allison can perform revision surgery for a variety of conditions – even for breast implants he did not originally operate on.

What a Revision Breast Surgery Can Correct

  • Breast implant ruptures/leaks
  • Desire to increase or decrease implant size
  • Capsular contracture complication (when the scar tissue around the implant tightens, making the implant hard and painful)
  • Change in breast tissue due to significant weight loss or gain
  • Shift in implant on the chest wall
  • Desire to change from silicone to saline (or vice versa)
  • Bottoming out (when implants fall)

Revision Breast Surgery Procedure

The surgical procedure for revision breast surgery will vary depending on the problem being addressed. Dr. Allison may recommend that the implants be removed and/or replaced to restore the natural, feminine contour you desire.

Revision Breast Surgery Recovery

Recovery from breast revision surgery will also vary depending on how the problem is addressed. However, you should allow at least 1-2 weeks to recover and expect to have temporary swelling and bruising after surgery. General tips include:

  • Make sure the incision areas remain clean
  • Wear the surgical bra
  • Do not lift heavy objects for several weeks
  • Avoid strenuous activity for several weeks
  • Use ointment provided by your doctor
  • Take prescribed medication, if needed
  • Avoid smoking for at least 2-4 weeks

Risks of Revision Breast Surgery

Revision breast surgery carries the same potential for complications as the original surgery. Dr. Allison will take every precaution necessary to ensure a positive outcome. Risks may include:

  • Sensation loss
  • Infection
  • Breast asymmetry
  • Scarring
  • Bleeding
  • Pain
  • Anesthesia complications

If you are experiencing any complications or discomforts with your breast implants, schedule an appointment with board certified breast revision surgeon Dr. Allison right away. The sooner you have the problem corrected, the sooner you can resume enjoyment of your body contour.
