Do You Bruise After Liposuction?

Liposuction has been one of the most popular and most frequently performed cosmetic surgery procedures for many years. This is because patients of all ages, gender and size have stubborn deposits of fat that fail to respond to controlled diet and exercise. Liposuction allows patients to permanently eliminate these stubborn pockets of fat in order to improve their body contours. Liposuction can be performed on many areas of the body including the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms, calves and ankles. Despite the many benefits of liposuction, many patients have concerns regarding recovery, specifically, liposuction bruising. While bruising is one of the most common side effects of liposuction, under the care of Dr. Allison in Gainesville, most patients can keep bruising to a minimum.

Bruising is inevitable for most patients after liposuction. Minor injury happens to the subcutaneous lymphatic capillaries during the fat removal process. These capillaries are small vessels that typically help drain away fluid from bodily injuries. Since temporary injury to these capillaries cannot be avoided in liposuction, swelling and bruising is present for most individuals.

The resulting bruising should subside at about 1-6 weeks post procedure. The severity of liposuction bruising depends on factors such as: genetics, how many areas are being treated, what medications were taken prior to the procedure, what foods are consumed and if someone is a smoker.

Recovery Tips

It is extremely important that patients follow the post-operative instructions provided to them by Dr. Allison following their liposuction procedure. By adhering to the recovery tips below, patients can do their part to minimize liposuction bruising or other liposuction side effects:

  • Use provided compression garments as instructed
  • Care for surgical drains as instructed (when applicable)
  • Ice the treatment area frequently
  • Avoid strenuous physical activity for at least 6 weeks after treatment
  • Use recommended supplements to help control pain and swelling
  • Stay well hydrated
  • Minimize salt intake

With proper care, liposuction recovery can be a smooth and uncomplicated process. When recovery is complete, patients are left with a tighter, slimmer body and more pleasing body contours.

If you are looking to tone and tighten certain areas of your body, liposuction may be able to help. To find out more about liposuction or to schedule an appointment with Dr. Allison, contact David W. Allison, MD at 703-754-8228 or website.
